Managing Giardia

Q: Our 2.5 yo Frenchie (Rosie) has a new sister (Bunny a female Frenchie now almost 4 months) who gave her documented Giardiasis. She has the symptoms.. The Dr started her and the puppy on Metranidizole (flagyl). We are trying to be fastidious but it is difficult. Can you give me an idea as to the dogs prognosis?
A: While giardiasis can be frustrating at times it is a condition which can be effectively treated. Metronidazole is a frequent choice for many veterinarians. A combination of metro and fenbendazole I feel has a better chance of clearing the dog. I also like timidazole but it must be compounded. Take a look at the video "Giardia". If you would like to discuss further let me know a good time and number to reach you. You can send that through the "contact us" button at the bottom of the home page.
