Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Shih Poo? A Shih Poo is a hybrid dog that combines the intelligence and low-shedding coat of the Poodle with the affectionate, gentle nature of the Shih Tzu. Known for their small size and big personalities, Shih Poos are loving, loyal companions who quickly become cherished family members. They’re playful without being overly energetic, making them well-suited for both active families and more relaxed households. With their soft, often curly coats and expressive eyes, Shih Poos have a natural charm that wins over everyone they meet.
How Big Do Shih Poos Get? Shih Poos are generally small to medium-sized dogs, standing between 8 to 17 inches in height and weighing around 8 to 18 pounds as adults. Their compact size makes them easy to manage, and they fit well in a variety of living spaces, from apartments to larger homes. They’re small enough to be easily carried but sturdy enough to enjoy outdoor play and moderate activities. Their size gives them the best of both worlds—portability and resilience.
Are Shih Poos Hypoallergenic? Yes, Shih Poos are typically considered hypoallergenic, thanks to their Poodle parentage. Their coats usually shed minimally, making them a good choice for people with mild allergies. Their coat texture can vary from soft and curly to wavy, and regular grooming is essential to keep it looking its best and tangle-free. Brushing a few times a week, along with the occasional trim, helps maintain their coat’s health and hypoallergenic qualities, making them a great fit for allergy-sensitive homes.
How Long Do Shih Poos Live? Shih Poos generally have a lifespan of 10 to 15 years. With the right care, including a healthy diet, regular exercise, and routine vet visits, many Shih Poos live long, happy lives. Their loyal, affectionate nature means they’re devoted companions throughout their years, and their playful personality tends to stay with them into their senior years. Shih Poos are perfect for people who want a long-term, loving friend.
Are Shih Poos Good with Children? Yes, Shih Poos are typically excellent with children, especially when they’re socialized early. They’re gentle and affectionate, and they enjoy being part of family activities, making them wonderful playmates for kids. Their moderate size and sturdy build mean they’re resilient enough for family life, though it’s always wise to teach young children how to handle them gently. Shih Poos’ adaptable and friendly nature means they’re just as happy playing in the yard as they are cuddling up for storytime.
Are Shih Poo Puppies Easy to Train? Shih Poo puppies are generally intelligent and responsive, making them fairly easy to train. They inherit the Poodle’s intelligence and the Shih Tzu’s willingness to please, so they respond well to positive reinforcement techniques like treats and praise. They do best with short, engaging training sessions, as they can get bored with repetitive exercises. Early training and socialization help Shih Poos grow into confident, well-behaved adults. With a bit of patience and consistency, Shih Poos can be delightful, obedient pets.
Do Shih Poos Shed? Shih Poos are low-shedding dogs, which is a major perk for those who want a cleaner home or have mild allergies. Their coats can vary from soft and wavy to tightly curled, and while they shed less than many breeds, regular grooming is still needed to keep their coat tangle-free and in great condition. A few brushing sessions per week, along with occasional grooming, helps reduce shedding and keeps their coat looking fluffy and healthy.
How Much Do Shih Poos Weigh? Adult Shih Poos typically weigh between 8 and 18 pounds. This small-to-medium weight makes them light enough to handle easily, yet they’re still sturdy enough for playtime and outdoor adventures. Their weight and size make them a great fit for a variety of living arrangements, as they’re easy to care for, travel with, and adapt well to different home environments.
