Appearance

The Yorkie Chon is immensely popular in the United States and has known great fame worldwide. These gorgeous designer dogs are available in a variety of colors with white, black, and brown being the most common. The Yorkie Chon is known for its large, round eyes that give it an innocent expression and floppy or pointy ears that make it appear toy-like.

The Yorkie Chon size is small to toy-size with an average weight of 6 to 8 pounds. Inheriting the small, adorable size of their parents, these beautiful dogs only grow 9 to 12 inches tall. They always appear friendly and happy and have a unique resemblance to their Yorkshire terrier parent.

Temperament

Yorkie Bichons are a small, fluffy breed of dogs that have made tremendous strides in the past two decades. Originally bred to be companions to allergy suffering owners, they are now a common breed of dog for all lovers to enjoy. These loyal companions crave human interaction and do not rely on their owners to provide entertainment. Although they may have a strong desire for human contact, Yorkie Chons know their limits and can be left on their own for a few hours.

These dogs are known to be good with children and other pets, making them an ideal pet for families. They are also alert and playful - despite their short stature, they have stamina and will keep you entertained with their antics. Yorkie Chons are also known to be good with other dogs, but they are not considered to be great as guard dogs as they are much too friendly. These dogs love being around people and will follow you everywhere you go if they're allowed to sit on your lap. They enjoy training and playing games, so long as their training sessions are lighthearted and fun.

Care

Yorkie Chon Grooming

These fun-loving small dogs are known for their lively, frantic energy and their distinctive black and tan fur. Yorkie Bichons have moderate grooming needs which means they only need to be brushed twice or three times a week to avoid matting of the hair or unruly knots. A monthly or bi-monthly bath is also recommended for Yorkie Chons.

Yorkie Chons, like their Bichon parent, can appear with tear stains under their eyes. An easy way to avoid this discoloration is to maintain a healthy hair routine that includes trimming the hair around their eyes and regularly cleaning their face.

These cute hybrid dogs are known to be very healthy, however, like all dogs, Yorkie Chons may be prone to certain dental issues like periodontal disease and tooth decay. It is beneficial to brush their teeth daily, especially after meals. Their nails should also be trimmed every few weeks to avoid discomfort.

Yorkie Chon Exercise Needs

While they are not classified as an active breed, Yorkie Chons do possess plenty of spunk and energy. They love being on the move, especially when fun outdoor games are involved. Games of fetch, swimming, and playing with toys that squeak are counted among their favorite activities. For these beautiful designer dogs, daily walks and activities should consist of at least 30 minutes of being on the move.

Yorkie Chon Health

Yorkie Chon dogs have a healthy, long life and lots of unconditional love to spoil their owners with. They are healthier than their purebred parents and benefit from a condition called hybrid vigor that helps to keep them in good health. The health of a Yorkie Chon is not tied to that of the parents like it is with purebred dogs. Because two purebred dogs are mixed, certain conditions are canceled out of their genes, resulting in healthier offspring.

Some health issues that might affect these dogs are dental and ear infections, hypothyroidism, hip dysplasia, allergies, cataracts, and elbow dysplasia. These conditions are not specific to Yorkie Chons but rather to most small dog breeds and although none are life-threatening, regular vet checkups should be scheduled to keep them in check.

Yorkie Chon Lifespan

Yorkie Chons are a healthy, happy designer breed that enjoys a long lifespan. Yorkie Chon dogs typically live between 12 and 15 years, with some going as far as 18 years. Although their appearance may be fragile and dainty, these beautiful dogs are hardy and resilient, and like their parents, with proper care, they can reach a lifespan of 18+ years.

Yorkie Chon Training

Yorkie Chons are intelligent animals that offer a variety of benefits to their owners. They teach children about the world, help people with their mental health, and can be great therapy dogs that aid in stress relief. Dogs need training to ensure they are confident and well-behaved, but it is always a rewarding process in the long run.

Yorkie Chons are incredibly smart, entertaining, and caring, but as intelligent as they are, they can be tough to manage sometimes. To make training more effective, it is recommended that you use plenty of rewards when training your Yorkie Chon puppy. You might be surprised at the effectiveness of some rewards.

There are a few types of rewards that you should use to train your Yorkie Chon. Food rewards are more effective when used in combination with verbal praise and treats. Be sure to use healthy food such as fruit, vegetables, or protein for the best results. Fun rewards are better for dogs who need to break out of bad behavior. Fun rewards include games such as fetch, tug, or hide-and-seek.

Although Yorkie Chons are friendly dogs, it is important to socialize them early. They can become shy around strangers or new dogs, so early socialization is a must.

History

The Yorkie Chon, also known as the Yorkie Bichon mix, is a cross between a Yorkshire Terrier and a Bichon Frise. The breed was developed at the beginning of the 21st century in the United States by an American breeder who wanted to develop a miniature version of the Bichon Frise, but with the Yorkie’s terrier nature.

Yorkie Chons are typically very friendly, affectionate, and energetic dogs who love being with people. They are easygoing and eager to please those around them. Yorkie Chons are quite capable of taking on the roles of both a watchdog and a cuddler as well. The breed’s popularity is based in part on its ability to charm with its tiny, adorable stature and affectionate disposition.

The breed was developed through crossbreeding but has been so popular that its breeding unions have become more and more selective for quality. Today, Yorkie Chons have been bred for different physical and temperamental characteristics to appear in multiple colors, sizes, and coat types. The Yorkie Chon is one of the most popular breeds in the world and should not be confused with its parent breed Yorkshire Terrier.
